Rooming with Bill Van Horn and Kevin Kaan, our first semester, was one of the most memorable experiences I had at USAFA. The experience had to do with one of our Mitchell Hall waiters; his name was William Crawford. We knew him as a waiter at first, and later, as a cadet dormitory janitor. But little did we know that he was a former POW and Medal of Honor recipient from WWII. Once I found out his true identity, I invited him to be one of our honored guests at the Falcon Heritage Forum at USAFA when I was Director of the Center for Character and Leadership Development in the late 90’s. This taught me a lesson: Always take the time to really get to know the people around you – they just might be heroes!
