A Chance to Give                           Tom Holkeboer

Every now and then the Lord gives me an opportunity to demonstrate (mostly to myself) that I’m serious about following Him. Several years ago my wife, Kathy, and I were put into a small group at our church with people we had never met or hardly knew. We enjoyed the process of becoming a close group which included getting to know Mark and Kristy, both medical doctors. Mark, we soon learned, had serious medical problems due to his one failing kidney.  After realizing the seriousness of his situation and several weeks of consideration and praying, I talked to Mark about the kidney donation process. Initial tests revealed I was a good match.  More extensive testing revealed I was a very good match. Now the situation demanded a serious decision. With Mark’s deteriorating health and my apparent good health, I decided the risks should not overrule in my thinking. A final confirmation came while reading in the Bible in Corinthians 6:20, “For you were bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body….” I knew because of my faith in Jesus Christ that this statement applied to me. Now six and half years after the kidney donation, I am happy to report, and thankful to the Lord, that both Mark and I are doing very well.
